The Verdict

FormCast selectionFrom AfarConfidence 4/5Didn't win
This is a weak-form novice field – most runners are debutants or have run once without threatening. From Afar is the one that stands out purely on pedigree and stable/team strength: she's by Baaeed (top-class miler, progeny doing well) out of a Dansili mare, bred by Car Colston Hall Stud, trained by William Haggas and ridden by Tom Marquand – a top-tier operation that specialises in producing well-schooled, well-bred fillies ready to fire first time out, especially in a maiden/novice at this level. Haggas has an excellent strike rate with unraced/lightly raced fillies stepping onto the track fresh, and Marquand's booking suggests confidence. La Torre (Ralph Beckett/Rossa Ryan, for the King & Queen, by Lope de Vega) is the other unraced type of similar update, but Beckett's fillies of this pedigree often need the run, and Haggas' record with first-time-out 2yo fillies at this sort of trip is arguably sharper. Lizzie Bennet (Kevin Ryan) ran second last time and has solid form claims but hails from a yard/sire (Dark Angel) more geared to sharper sprint trips than this booked 7f test, and her form figure (2) suggests she's already knocking on the door but may still find one of the fashionably-bred newcomers too good. Ferrystream has form figures 14 – decent but already killed as inconsistent. Divine Concerto ran 9-8, stepping up in trip but hasn't shown enough. Blue Vixen and Sweltering both finished no better than 7th/8th and look up against it. Zirconic's a maiden with an average effort (5th). Overall, the case for From Afar is built on the strength of the Haggas string, the Baaeed sire-power emerging in 2yo maidens, and the presence of a leading jockey at a key stable, suggesting this is more than a token runner. Backing quality debutants from top yards in this sort of race is often the smart play against experienced-but-modest form horses.
