The Verdict
FormCast selectionSharaddConfidence 3/5Won ✓
This is a tricky maiden/novice sprint full of unraced or lightly raced two-year-olds, so stable and sire clues matter more than form. Deputy Vice is the only one with a form line (344 over three runs) and looks solid but not spectacular, and his best form came on quicker ground with a step up now questionable given the soft surface today - Mehmas progeny are usually sharp and precocious but can find soft ground unhelpful.
Sharadd is bred to be very smart - by Dark Angel (top sprinting sire, excellent with soft ground winners) out of a Elusive City mare, trained by William Haggas who is excellent with juveniles first time out, and ridden by in-form Tom Marquand. Haggas yard typically sends out well-schooled, fit types even on debut, and Dark Angel's stock handle cut ground very well, which suits today's soft conditions perfectly. The market forecast (not fully shown here but typically Haggas/Marquand combos are fancied) should reflect a leading contender, and yard form for this trainer at Haydock and with this jockey is strong.
Powerful Force (Kevin Ryan, by Perfect Power) and Time To Play (K R Burke, by Blue Point) are the other precocious speed types to note, but Ryan's yard has had a quieter spell and Blue Point/Burke combo is less proven in constant testing ground. Playfull Warrior has a run already (excused as it was on quicker ground) but the trainer, Clive Cox, is strong with sprint 2yos.
Overall this is a formful puzzle, but Sharadd's superior pedigree for this ground, in a track and trainer combination with a strong record, gives the best combination of proven aptitude and stable class. No standout backup for each-way value given the unknown market and near-uniform lack of profile among the field.
