This is a typically messy 19-runner apprentice handicap on yielding ground over a mile, so I'm looking for a horse with recent solid form and clear trip suitability rather than trying to pick the most obvious. Carvalhal's recent figures (0-0210) show a horse in good current form with a clear second-placed effort last time and improving pattern under a claiming apprentice (Nicola Burns 2lb claim helps effective weight). OR 56 off 138lbs is competitive in this field, and he's fit having run 61 days ago without too long a layoff. Several of the top-rated horses (Navajo Point, Selective Power, Volendam, Lady Kelly OR60) carry topweight and have question marks — Navajo Point's form figure 60-842 is workmanlike but not progressive; Selective Power has been off since a poor run 81 days back; Volendam's 102520 shows fair form but she's dropped in grade recently after a moderate run; Lady Kelly's --98637 is patchy and she's stepping up class/field size. Medieval Night (304762) is fairly consistent but hasn't shown enough toe to win of late. Carvalhal, meanwhile, looks up to winning off his current mark on a sound recent scoring trajectory, and with a 2lb claim taken off, he gets in light relative to his ability. He is unexposed at today's C&D level compared to some of the more tried-and-failed types near the top of the weights. I'll take him as best current-form runner at a fair price in a wide-open apprentice handicap.
