This is a competitive 2yo maiden with several fashionable, well-bred newcomers and a few with solid form. Izuba, by Siyouni out of a Teofilo mare, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by a strong jockey in P J McDonald, has already shown ability with a runner-up finish on debut. Balding's Siyouni-sired types tend to progress well from debut runs and handle good ground at 7f effectively; the runner-up form suggests he was competitive and should have improved for the experience. Ghost Raider (Ralph Beckett, also placed second on debut, by Invincible Spirit) and Scenic Route (Fahey stable, also second) are the other obvious form threats, but Izuba's dam-side and Balding's strong record with lightly raced sorts stepping up give him a slight edge, plus his run was fairly recent (43 days) allowing conditioning without being overly fresh. The unraced batch — Bayraktar (state of Rest colt for Burke, well bred), Chaos Inn Court, Unicorn Milkshake — are unknown quantities, and while Burke/De Sousa types can go well fresh, backing a horse with zero form in a stacked maiden is riskier than backing one who has already proven he can race competitively. Five Years and Pete's Angel both have a 0 form figure suggesting they were well beaten, so are discounted. Mezzo Forte was down the field last time (71 days ago) and looks to need more improvement. On balance, Izuba offers the best blend of proven ability, class of connections, and value relative to the more exposed favourites in the market, and I expect him to go well at a fair price given the market likely focuses on the fashionable unraced options.
