This is a weak-looking Newmarket 2yo maiden with no proven form standing out strongly. Godolphin/Appleby debutants dropped in at this level with William Buick aboard are usually well-fancied for good reason - they tend not to run first-time-out types unless they're expecting a bold showing, and Frankel colts by this sire/dam line (Pivotal damsire) often need a mile and take well to good ground, which fits today's conditions perfectly. Appleby's string is typically forward enough fitness-wise for debut success, and Buick doesn't ride moderate types in maidens like this. The best form in the field belongs to Lead The Squad (8-7) who was runner-up last time and looks the one to beat from the exposed types, but that was over a shorter trip and he wears cheekpieces suggesting the yard is still working out how to get the best from him. Netherstream (3-5) and Sydney Carton (3-0-7-3) have both shown ability without winning, but neither looks classy enough to worry the top two. Del Pearo and Epistle are workmanlike sorts with modest form figures. Hamrin, from Andrew Balding/Oisin Murphy, is another interesting unraced type but Balding's first-time-out strike rate with debutants at this festival-type venue is typically more moderate than Appleby's, and the Camelot sire line skews more towards stamina rather than the sharp mile speed needed here. On balance, the Godolphin newcomer with the big supporting team looks the standout on class/potential grounds, and the market is likely to reflect that with a short price, but the alternative form horses don't scream "value under-bet" enough to switch.
