The Verdict
FormCast selectionSomers IslesConfidence 4/5Didn't win
This is a competitive maiden fillies' sprint with plenty of unraced types from strong yards, but Somers Isles stands out as the one with proven form at a solid level. Her single run resulted in a clear second, and with Andrew Balding training and Oisin Murphy taking the ride, this is a stable and jockey combination that doesn't take bookings lightly in a Class 4 maiden - Murphy wouldn't fly in for this unless confident. Balding's team is excellent with fillies of this type, and a debut runner-up finish at this trip suggests she has genuine speed and is fit to defy a 40-day gap given the yard's form with such follow-up runs. Royal Message and Starburster both also have some form (5-5 and 4 respectively) but their finishing positions look modest compared to Somers Isles' placed effort, and neither carries the same stable/jockey confidence signal. The bulk of the remaining field is unexposed with no form, making it very hard to assess true ability - while several come from high-percentage yards (Hannon, Boughey, Burrows) capable of well-related fast-ground 2yo sprinters, blind faith in unraced types is risky against a filly who has already shown she handles this test and match fitness. Good to firm ground over 6f suits browsing speed, and Somers Isles' profile fits perfectly. I'm happy to take a stance against the unexposed brigade and back proven ability with a top rider up.
