This is a messy, competitive 6f heavy-ground handicap where several of the "top-rated" runners have questions. Milford and Wild Clary carry top weight off 87 but both have modest recent form figures (Milford 4-6092, Wild Clary -42314) and are unproven at this trip/ground combo at this level. Territorial Knight, Kodi Lion and Woven are all consistent but capped types who look to have found their level around OR 84-85 without winning of late. Tip Foster stands out: lightly raced 3yo gelding with a clean recent form line of 3-1, including a win last time out, and he's clearly progressive with a big weight-for-age allowance (127lbs) giving him a big pull versus the older, more exposed rivals carrying 133-140lbs. His sire Dream Ahead and damsire Lope De Vega both throw plenty of forward, precocious sprint types who handle cut in the ground, and the fact connections have stepped him back out having won suggests they think there's more to come. The 91-day layoff is a slight query but 3yos often improve for a summer break, and David & Nicola Barron know how to place these types. The barrier draw (2) is workable for this 6f Haydock course and with a subtle downhill run to the stands' rail, low-to-mid draws are not a disadvantage on testing ground. Joanna Mason has ridden him previously and is a fair conditional. Given the physical scope suggested by the improving form figures and the favourable weight, Tip Foster looks the most likely to be improving into this compared to a paddock of fairly exposed, capped-out handicappers. I expect him to start around 6/1-8/1, offering value relative to a shorter-priced but vulnerable favourite.
