The Verdict
FormCast selectionAwwjaanConfidence 4/5Didn't win
Small four-runner maiden but the shape strongly favours the well-bred debutante. Awwjaan is by top young sire Baaeed out of a Gleneagles mare, trained by Ed Walker who is adept with fillies, and ridden by Oisin Murphy - a strong booking suggesting real confidence from a powerful owner (Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum). First-time-out runners from this yard/owner combo with a big-name jockey booked are usually well fancied for a reason, and connections wouldn't use Murphy on a moderate sort in this grade. Victoria Night has solid form figures (2nd) 13 days ago and will improve for that experience, making her the most obvious form-based threat, but she had to be held off already and is stepping up in class against fresher, potentially superior stock. Godspeed Girl's solitary 5th-place effort a month ago is workmanlike but unremarkable, and she needs more to trouble the principals. She's Got A Way, from Karl Burke's yard with Ryan Moore aboard, is another interesting debutant, but the market and pedigree strength edge in Awwjaan's favour given the sire's coverage results this season and Murphy's stable link. On balance, the concealed potential of the well-bred, well-ridden newcomer in a small, weak-looking maiden field is the best combination of chance and likely underestimated market price, especially with no proven form to shorten her odds artificially. I'll side with Awwjaan to defy any lack of experience and win on pedigree and stable intent.
