The Verdict
FormCast selectionSaffron BayConfidence 3/5Didn't win
This is a messy 2yo maiden with several unraced/lightly-raced types, so best to side with proven, progressive form. Saffron Bay is out of a Frankel mare, trained by Charles Hills (strong with 2yo fillies) and ridden by Oisin Orr for a yard that travels north for a reason. Her sole run was a solid third, and that experience over a genuine test should tell in this bigger field on soft ground at Beverley, a track where placing and pace judgement matter. Necromancer (Beckett, Jason Hart) has been runner-up last time and looks the most obvious form threat, but she's already had two efforts and the manner of her placing suggests she may find last-time-out form hard to improve on third run; Saffron Bay looks fresher and more relevant on a stronger physical/pedigree profile, with only one run to sharpen her. Tommo's Queen (Cracksman colt-bred, Michael & David Easterby) ran creditably last time and could improve for a red-hot yard, but hasn't shown quite enough finishing speed yet. Halcon's form figures (36) show she's already flattered a couple of times without winning.
Draw 4 for Saffron Bay is workable at Beverley's tricky, undulating 7f, and having safely negotiated a stiffer test first time out, she looks the type to progress and take this. The unraced/no-form types (Moudora, Luna Lacy, Sweet Distraction, Wishful Thinker) are all unknown quantities and hard to trust blind in a competitive field, despite decent pedigrees.
Overall this looks a fair edge over the market if Saffron Bay is sent off at a reasonable price given the experience/pedigree combination working in her favour.
