The Verdict
FormCast selectionAshnakConfidence 4/5Didn't win
Ashnak carries top weight for good reason - OR88 is clear best in this competitive staying handicap, and he's dropped in class/rating from a higher mark. Recent form 834278 shows he's racing consistently at a competitive level, with a second placed run in there. He's fit having run 12 days ago, O'Meara is a top yard, and Tudhope takes over from the saddle which is a positive booking - a strong stable/jockey combo often signals confidence. The 1m5f trip on soft ground should suit given his pedigree (Sea The Moon is a proven staying influence) and prior efforts around this sort of test. Main market rival Strassia is interesting but has had a long layoff pattern (/606-9) and looks less consistent, while the O'Meara second string could easily be vulnerable fresh off headgear application. Elsass is another in-form type but is stepping up markedly in trip having his best form over shorter, and his sire Sottsass suggests more of a middle-distance influence rather than out and out stamina at 1m5f. The rest of the field are lower rated types (75-83) who look to be competing below Ashnak's level - Pearl Eye, Humble Spark, Golden West etc. are all solid but capped by their ratings ceiling. Ashnak's class edge, fitness, and positive jockey booking make him the swing selection in a race that otherwise lacks a stand-out. At a double-figure or high single-figure price this represents value given his rating advantage over this field.
