The Verdict
FormCast selectionCity CaptainConfidence 4/5Didn't win
This is a notoriously chaotic 14-runner heavy-ground 5f sprint, but City Captain stands out on recent form and trajectory. His last four runs read 6-2-1-1, showing improving form and two recent wins, and he's clearly progressive at this trip. He races off 85 which looks fair given he's won his last two starts, suggesting he's ahead of the handicapper. Draw 5 is workable - not an extreme outside stall which can be a disadvantage in big-field Haydock 5f sprints, and not stuck against the rail either. Jason Watson is a capable jockey booking. The key rivals: I'm Next and Jungle Drums are top-rated on official figures but both carry 135lbs and have had mixed recent form (Jungle Drums' 514404 shows plenty of inconsistency, with a run of 4-0-4 recently). Eye of Dubai is in-form (800182) but stepping up in grade/class off a nice amount of weight. Zain Primus has an interesting profile (3yo colt, 31109) but the untested factor of a maturing 3yo in a red-hot heavy-ground sprint handicap vs experienced geldings is a slight concern, plus draw 1 could be tricky if pace develops up the far side. City Captain's proven recent scoring form, suitable racing weight relative to to his opposition, and ground-neutral profile make him the most solid each-way/win proposition in a race lacking a standout. He is unexposed enough to have more improvement left, unlike some of the more exposed combatants at the top of the weights.
