The Verdict
FormCast selectionCity Of GoldConfidence 3/5Didn't win
This is a wide-open maiden with several unexposed types, but City Of Gold has the strongest form on paper - a close second last time out (form reads 52), by Wootton Bassett out of a Shamardal mare, a pedigree suggesting he'll handle a mile and the soft ground well. He's already shown placed form at this level and the step forward from a debut run to a solid second suggests he's going the right way. Blinkers added today could sharpen him up further for a yard (O'Brien) that knows how to place two-year-olds to win maidens at this time of year. Noble Exhibit (3rd on debut) and Leadlight (462, rated 80, wearing cheekpieces) are the obvious rivals - Leadlight has the official rating and looks progressive, but his finishing position has regressed across three runs (4-6-2) which is a slight concern, and he's already had three tougher starts. Aladdin's Cave is an unraced O'Brien colt by Camelot - could be anything but totally unknown, hard to trust in soft/heavy ground on debut against experienced rivals. Battle Ready and Lamar River both have modest form figures (05, 65) and look up against it. On ratings and profile, City Of Gold looks the one with most solid, proven substance for this trip and ground, and the market should reflect him as a fair, competitive price rather than an over-bet favourite given the unraced runners in the field add uncertainty that should be pushing value toward the proven form horse.
