The Verdict

FormCast selectionChymbulakConfidence 3/5Didn't win
In a maiden full of unraced 2yo colts from strong yards, the two with actual form (Chymbulak and San Jose) have a real edge over the debutants, who are all unknown quantities regardless of pedigree or trainer reputation. Chymbulak was a close-up 2nd on debut for Roger Varian, a trainer who runs juveniles fit and progresses them well, and Dark Angel/Kodiac blood typically brings the speed to cope with 7f at this stage of the season. Ray Dawson picking up the ride suggests continued confidence. San Jose (4th last time, 20 days ago) is another with experience but his run was less obviously promising than Chymbulak's runner-up effort. Among the first-time-out horses, Impasto (Juddmonte/Balding/Palace Pier) and Korsakov (Haggas/Sea The Stars) look the most fashionably bred and drop in with strong connections, but with zero form to assess pace, trip suitability or attitude, they're hard to trust with confidence in a competitive 11-runner field, even if the market makes one of them favourite. Having a proven run over track and trip (course experience at Ascot, seen a track, taken to the trip) is a genuine edge in a race like this, and Chymbulak ticks that box while others don't. I'll oppose the unexposed market leaders and back the horse with the most tangible evidence of ability shown in a race.
